A Report On English Translation Of Sentence Reconstruction In Maritime Search And Rescue Documents

Navigation technology is developing rapidly,but accidents at sea also happen.To minimize the human injuries and financial loss,it is important to carry out search and rescue at sea.Due to the fact that shipping is the most international industry,adopting standard and uniform guidelines for search and rescue at sea is of great significance.The same is true when it comes to translating such documents.This practice mainly focuses on syntactical translation in Guide to Capsized Vessels,Guide of Firefighting and Rescue at Sea and Guide to Emergency Towing.Specifically,under the framework of Skopos theory,it studies the strategies to translate non-subject sentences,conditional sentences and negative sentences.Because languages in such documents are simple and clear to understand,all the means are attempted to keep its features in the translated work.Chinese non-subject sentences are translated into imperative sentences or passive voice in English;Chinese conditional sentences are translated into English conditional sentences with the word "if" or adverbial clause;Chinese negative sentences are directly translated into English negative sentences with the words "no" or "not" or they are converted into words or phrases with negative meanings.This report summarizes the translation practice from the perspectives of description of translation target,translation process,case studies and conclusion,which is expected to provide references for future translation and studies.
