Literary works have aesthetic values. In the process of translating literary works, how to reproduce the aesthetic value of the source text is one of the most important issues that the translator should consider.According to the Functional Equivalence Theory proposed by Eugene Nida,a well-known American translation theorist,it is on the function rather than the form of language that the translator ought to put emphasis when it comes to the equivalence between the source text and the target text.Based on this theory, the present thesis attempts to explore the aesthetic reproduction in literary translation with an exemplification of translating the short story Another Dimension into Chinese. In view of the existing research and the characteristics of Another Dimension, the present thesis probes into the aesthetic function of literary works in three aspects:language style, cultural implication and emotional appeal, and discusses the strategies and methods of aesthetic reproduction accordingly in the translation practice. In order to reproduce the aesthetic value of the source text,it is recommended that the equivalence of the aesthetic function should be the priority, that is,target-text readers should be able to feel the beauty of the work the way source-text readers do.To serve this purpose, the translator can adjust the word order flexibly, and use methods like adaptation and creative translation to reproduce the stylistic flavour of the source language;it is suggested that domestication be taken as the main strategy, and methods such as amplification and annotation be adopted to reproduce the beauty of the cultural implication;in order to reproduce the beauty of the emotional appeal, amplification can be used to translate environmental description, and as for psychological description,it is noted that the inner monologue should be colloquial.
