The Midnight Library, written by British best-selling author Matt Haig, won the first place in fiction category of Goodreads. This novel is about life, death and everything in between. It tells a story of finding hope, struggling with life, and letting go of regret. The book conveys the most resonant emotions with plain words and natural sentences. It is a popular novel worth reading. This translation practice report is based on the first fifteen chapters of The Midnight Library. The translator hopes that through the translation of this book,a correct and positive outlook on life can be conveyed to readers, especially in the context of complex epidemic situation, and hopes this novel can heal people who are facing adversity in life. The purpose of this practice report is to explore the reproduction of original style in novel translation. In terms of translation strategy, this report, from the perspective of Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory, expects to maintain the original style to the greatest extent.Nida’s functional equivalence theory advocates that the translation should be equivalent to the original both in meaning and form, which is of great guiding significance to style reproduction.Based on the functional equivalence theory, this report chooses The Midnight Library as the translation object, analyzes and discusses how to reproduce the novel style in the translation, and holds that the translator should grasp the narrative characteristics and spiritual intension of the original work.To realize the translation purpose, the translator takes the reproduction of character images and plot atmosphere in the original work as the basic framework. Then, she analyzes specific cases from the aspects of character description, dialogue description and psychological description, and shares the specific translation process and approaches, such as division, conversion, liberal translation and amplification.
