C-E Subtitle Translation Of Empresses In The Palace Under Skopos Theory

The economy has developed rapidly in China for the past few years,and its international status and influence have continued to increase frequently.In order to enhance China’s cultural soft strength,many outstanding domestic television dramas are working hard to improve the production level and make unremitting efforts to achieve the strategic goal of Chinese culture go abroad.Hence subtitle translation is an important way for domestic outstanding film and television dramas to transmit Chinese culture abroad.This thesis is based on the six series subtitle translation of the American version of Empresses in the Palace as the carrier under the guidance of the skopos theory,the core theory of German Functionalist.The thesis explores three basic rules according to the skopos theory.In the translation of the American version of Empresses in the Palace,it enriches the theory of C-E subtitle translation and provides a basis for its practice.Among them,the hot subtitle translations which are widely concerned by the people in the Internet are the focus in this thesis.So far,the evaluation of the subtitle translation of American version of Empresses in the Palace has not been satisfactory,but the overall score of American version of Empresses in the Palace on the official American website is very high.It can be seen that the analysis of the subtitles translation of Empresses in the Palace can be useful for Chinese film and television works to provide examples for external dissemination in the future.In addition,this thesis also analyzes the methods of subtitle translation under skopos theory,the cultural-driven strategy,replacement strategy,addition strategy,omission strategy and communicative strategy are the main five strategies used in subtitle translation of American version of Empresses in the Palace.This thesis also combines other subtitle translation strategies and their different effects to propose a few suggestions under the guidance of the skopos theory.The thesis provides a practical case for the subtitle translation of Chinese film and television works to promote the external dissemination of Chinese film and television work sand play a significant supporting role in the further promotion of Chinese film and television works in the future.
