As a director, Tsai Ming-liang is the most eccentric one after the new movie movement of Taiwan. Both historical attention and political metaphor are not followed or involved in his creation of videos. Just as a batch of new generation directors of Taiwan in the period of "post-new movie", they prefer to recording personal growth than express grand history and they hold that it's the emotional memory and the trajectory of spiritual life of insignificant people at the present time are worthy of shooting repeatedly. Therefore, throughout the 11 movies which have been completed by Tsai Ming-liang, what we see from that is not the reflection of past Taiwan and the individual comprehension of the living environment, but the inner beliefs and thoughts of the director and his direct perception of the material world as an individual.As an artist, Tsai Ming-liang is the most willing director to inherit "Cahiers du cinema", and the obvious performance is the thoroughly rebelling to the mode of classical dramas about the audio-visual approaches of film, and trying to make the film become close to reality rather than confuse the virtual world of audiences.As his spiritual mentor Francois Truffaute, Tsai Ming-liang thinks the directors are the author of a film and they should create a film freely and keep the writing style unchanged according to the personal idea. So we can find that different art categories have already interacted with each other in the video world of Tsai Ming-liang, in which the adoption of the conception of installation art and the demonstration of behavior art's videos are quietly influencing his film morphology.
