The Deserted, which was released in 2017,was the first virtual reality(VR)film(55minutes in length)by Tsai Ming-Liang.In its original Chinese, the film's title means "The Home of Lan Ruo Temple";it is a short ghost story by Pu Songling, who was a Chinese writer during the Qing Dynasty. The non-physical scenes into which viewers are immersed by use of a VR headset, and the filming sites the film points to,interweave in scenes throughout the film. From beginning to end,the boundaries between the virtual and the real become clearer. The article focuses on the various different types of scenes in The Deserted and Tsai Ming-Liang's presence throughout the production process of the film to describe how he creates these scenes, how he captures language and how he addresses issues within the film. The language of film has features that go beyond merely the development of film technology. Therefore,in terms of deep focus, stage placing(mise-en-scčne)and sound design(as aspects of the language of film),we can explore the characteristics of VR in terms of scene narrative while we discover the narrative of the film.By studying The Deserted within the wider context of Tsai Ming-Liang's entire film series,we can observe the film's true context and the extension of the director's creative style.Common topics in Tsai Ming-Liang's films include body, face and ghosts, and these are re-affirmed within the context of VR – the relationship between his films, real life and personal memory being thereby re-established.Lee Kangsheng's Image of Life remains an indivisible part of Tsai Ming-Liang's film.By taking The Deserted as a sample and using some of its key scenes, this article tries to analyse Tsai Ming-Liang's insight and practice of VR in order to demonstrate the feasibility of making films using VR technology and, furthermore,to provide a unique and appreciative perspective of Tsai Ming-Liang's work.
