A Report On The Translation Of Be Reasonable! A Guide To Critical And Clear Thinking (Chapter 6 And Chapter 7)

The source text of this translation practice comes from chapter 6 and part of chapter 7 of the academic book, Be Reasonable! A Guide to Critical and Clear Thinking(p95-p122). Written by a famous Australian scholar, Ronald Frederick Holt, this book is devoted to improving the readers’ understanding and application of the principles of informal logic, while this part of the book mainly focuses on several common informal logic fallacies.To analyze this translation practice, a thorough description of the translation project dealing with the selected part was given and some targeted suggestions and strategies were offered too. Also, the concrete difficulties were analyzed. In addition, since the source text is an academic book which belongs to informative text, Newmark’s communicative translation theory was selected as the main guiding theory to solve the problems occurred in the process. What’s more, to make the translation more fluent, concise and in line with the target language habits, some translation skills including conversion, amplification, change of words order, adding notes and change of voices were applied specifically. In short, the targeted readers should be emphasized on the basis of the translator’s full understanding of the source texts and appropriate translation skills should be adopted to make the translation more receivable, thus some comprehension problems among targeted readers can be avoided effectively and the better communicative effect could be finally achieved.
