| This translation report deals with BE REASONABLE ! A Guide to Critical and Clear Thinking(Chapter 1, Chapter 2 and Chapter 5), a book written by R. F. Holt. By enumerating, analyzing as well as explaining the skills of argument and 40 common logical fallacies, this book is devoted to improving the reader’s understanding and application of the principles of informal logic and as such is concerned with skillful, accurate argumentation in ordinary, non-specialist language. This translation report covers the translation version of the book’s chapter one, chapter two, and chapter five. Chapter one is the introduction of the book. Chapter two and chapter five describe how to define “argument” and the fallacies of assumption, which counts one argument skill, in argumentation, thus chapter two serves as the “whole” while chapter five the “branch”. Due to the translation text’s academic character, it is an informative text and it is translated under the guidance of Newmark’s communicative translation theory. And at the same time, I have used these techniques in the process of translation: division, amplification, omission, repetition, changing words order, and conversion. Both theory and techniques are used for the coherence as well as the concision of the translation version. All in all, based on the full understanding of the original text, the translator has adopted some translation techniques for readers’ easy understanding, so the communicative effect is achieved. |
