A Report On The Interpretation Of The Speeches On International Forum On The Cooperation Of The Six Provinces In Central China On The Belt And Road Initiative

In recent years, China's central region has enjoyed a wider cooperation momentum in terms of areas, space and approaches. Under such circumstances, Wuhan in Hubei province held the grand Ninth Expo Central China on May 18 th, 2015, which enabled the six provinces in Central China to cooperate with each other and to understand, adapt to and lead the new normal of the economy and provide opportunities for Central China to exchange views and learn from each other so as to build up a stronger economy in Central China. The writer participated in this grand conference as an interpreter.The interpreting practice report is selected from International Forum on the Cooperation of the Six Provinces in Central China on the Belt and Road Initiative held during the Ninth Expo Central China. The Chinese speakers make detailed descriptions of the current situation, prospects and specific actions from their own perspectives. The practice report is guided by the Interpretive Theory, established by Danica Seleskovitch in 1968. Based on the difficulties appearing in this practice text, the report has made a detailed discussion about the major interpreting strategies and methods adopted in the specific examples.The report is divided into four parts. The first part is the general introduction of the background and contents of the strategy of the Rise of Central China and the Belt and Road Initiative. The second part is about preparation, interpreting process and evaluation. The third part is about the case study of interpreting. The author puts forward interpreting problems from six aspects: numbers, expressions with Chinese characteristics, speakers' mouth fillers, Chinese culture-loaded words and idioms, lack of logical relations in sentences and disorderly long sentences. In order to address these problems, the report mainly focuses on two strategies--deverbalization and explicitation derived from the Interpretive Theory. Further specific methods have been adopted according to the six situations, including ambiguous treatment, liberal interpreting, omission, explanation, addition and reorganization. To some extent this report contributes to the research of conference interpreting. The fourth part is a summary about the practice report as well as shortcomings and implications from the practice of the conference interpreting.
