A Project Report On The E-C Translation Of The Windows Of Time Frozen And Other Three Short Stories By Yuri Vynnychuk

This report is based on the translation of An Embroidered World, The Windows of Time Frozen, Beatrice:Twilight, the Cold and A Dream about a Tramcar by Yuri Vynnychuk who is a master of black humor and absurdity in the contemporary Ukraine and is among the first-generation Ukrainian writers after Ukrainian literature regained its freedom in creation. However, Chinese readers know little about him and his work.The four short stories by Vynnychuk, skillfully constructed and featured with fantastic plots and humor, are full of magic elements. The author found that if these stories are translated literally in order to retain the original form, the translation will be hard to understand for Chinese readers both in content or the writer's idea, thus impairing the reading pleasure of readers; however, if they are translated based on free translation only, the original form and structure given no attention to, the unique writing style of Vynnychuk will be smashed, decreasing the literary value of his work.The key to novel translation is keeping readability or producing a smooth translation that is faithful to the content of the original text and conveys the original idea of the writer. Guided by Peter Newmark's communicative translation theory, the author adopted translation techniques including amplification, lessened translation and domestication, etc. during the process of translation. Besides, the word expression and logic of the target text are readjusted to make the translation more adaptive to the wording habit and thinking mode of Chinese readers.The author strives to represent the maximum of the figures, literary images and writer's emotions in the source text, expecting that the effect the translation produces on the target readers is as close as to that produced on the original readers.
