As an international language, English plays a very important role to develop students’ comprehensive qualities and effectively enhance their ability of learning English. With China’s economic development and social progress, people increasingly high demand for talent, but English is undoubtedly a kind of high-quality talents need to have the ability of application. Public English course as a compulsory course in higher vocational colleges, for Higher Vocational Students’ ability development, the cultivation of comprehensive quality, vocational college students future employment, and effectively enhance the ability of English has a very important role. Therefore, strengthening teaching research about the public English of higher vocational colleges has very important practical significance.This research take public English teaching in higher vocational colleges as the breakthrough point. First the related concepts and the significance of public English teaching in higher vocational colleges are discussed. Then through the questionnaire survey, the present situations of the public English teaching in higher vocational colleges and the existing problems in investigation and research. And analyze the causes of these problems. The research found that some outstanding problems existing in the public English teaching in high vocational colleges.(1) Aspects of teachers: there is a deviation of public awareness of English teaching; lag of teaching philosophy; teaching methods is unscientific.(2) Aspects of students: English foundation is generally poor; the lack of students’ English learning interest; the importance of students’ knowledge of English is not in place.(3) Teaching planning aspects: Teaching plan is unreasonable; Mass teaching classes, teaching equipment is old.(4) Evaluation system aspect: single evaluation way. And the causes of these problems are :(1) The teachers’ late degrees are low and they lack training in teaching ability.(2) The learning content is various and the teaching method is monotonous cause the students to lose interest.(3) The teaching plan is not reasonable and teaching environment is obsolete.(4) The leaderships and the students’ indifference make the teachers in a dilemma when setting evaluation methods. Therefore, this thesis proposes a more targeted basis to improve recommendations:(1) Strengthen the construction of teachers and improve their teaching level.(2) To enhance students’ interest and efficiency in learning English.(3) To improve the quality of teaching plan and teaching environment.(4) To improve the teaching evaluation system.
