For a long time, Chinese and Western translation theories and aesthetics are closely related. The influence of aesthetics on the Chinese traditional translation theory is extraordinary. Professor Liu Miqing, based on Chinese traditional esthetics, puts forward his theory of translation aesthetics, enriching Chinese contemporary translation aesthetics. He deems that literary translation is an art of language reproduction and it needs to use another language to reappear the original beauty of the text. Literary translation thus acts as a process of aesthetic experience and aesthetic reproduction. The novel Big Breast and Wide Hips is one of Mo Yan's most representative works. With delicate and vivid language, Howard Goldblatt's version of Big Breast and Wide Hips is a classic to translators. However, translation researches on Big Breast and Wide Hips mainly concentrated on its culture and translation strategies combined with various translation theories. Scholars who assess the translation version through a comprehensive research from the perspective of translation aesthetics are still scanty. Thus this paper aims to apply the theory of translation aesthetics to do specific corpus research from the formal system and non-formal system of aesthetic object, to explore how to embody the aesthetic implication of original text and to find out how the two dynamic factors(aesthetic subject and aesthetic object) achieve harmony and unity in the process of translation, without losing the original aesthetic style. The translation research of this paper will provide a new angle for researchers, namely the perspective of translation aesthetics, to study Howard Goldblatt's version of Big Breast and Wide Hips. At the same time, it can also provide a reference for the practice and research of literary translation. The whole layout is as follows. Introduction outlines the background, significance of the study, research objective and structure of the thesis. In addition to introduction and conclusion, the content is divided into three chapters: The first chapter is literature review. The second chapter discusses the aesthetic constituents and aesthetic reproduction in translation aesthetics. The third chapter gives example analysis about the formal values and non-formal values of aesthetic representations in Big Breast and Wide Hips. The last section is conclusion which summarizes the main research results of this paper, maps out the future direction of theresearch and points out inadequacies.
