| Named as Howard Goldblatt’s most representative translation, Red Sorghum has triggered numerous studies and comments on its translation skills and strategies, among which the perspective of aesthetics still remains invisible in relevant studies.Mo Yan’s Red Sorghum is his first novel that has gained great popularity. This novel, featuring prosaic language as well as territorial dialect, radiates literary glamour of humorousness and vividness. The translation of novels which scores high literary value almost stands out in aesthetic aspects. However, in view of the aesthetic differences between Chinese and Western cultures, reproducing aesthetic value of translation remains a great challenge for translators. Tentative attempts guided by translation aesthetics have been made in this paper to unveil the ways of reproducing aesthetic effect of Red Sorghum from the cultural, textual, and lexical aspects. Here arrives the conclusions:1. The aesthetic differences between Chinese and Western cultures make it difficult to equivalently achieve aesthetic effect in translations, and the common practice for translators is to transfer aesthetic elements; 2. The multi-dimensional aesthetic reproduction can be regarded as the most optimal way to fulfill aesthetic value and the key to a successful translation is to grasp "ultra-text"; 3. The aesthetic reproduction, more often than not, entails some necessary sacrifice. Shaking off fetters of original form, Howard Goldblatt often employs the rewriting strategy, which makes his translation more reader-oriented. |
