Translation aesthetics was firstly put forward by Professor Liu Miqing in his book An Introduction to Translation Aesthetics, which refers to the integration of Chinese traditional aesthetic thoughts and concrete translation practice. From the perspective of aesthetics, translation is to represent the aesthetic value of original text as much as possible. As aesthetic subject, translators undertake the task of transforming and conveying aesthetic value of the original text. This thesis tries to study how Yilin Edition of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer achieves aesthetic representation in formal system and non-formal system from the perspective of translation aesthetics. Some specific examples are chosen from the translation aesthetic object to analyze from formal system and non-formal system with the translation aesthetic theoretical framework. Then the author compares the aesthetic effect of translation version with that of the original text and finally draws conclusions. The thesis shows that Yilin edition preferably realizes the aesthetic representation in formal system (includes phonology, lexicon and syntax) and non-formal system (includes sentiments and ideas, images and symbols). At phonological level, Yilin edition mainly uses onomatopoeia and rhyme to represent the aesthetic effect of the original text; at lexical level, Yilin edition focuses on the choice of words and colloquial expressions, which could provide the similar aesthetic effect of original text; at syntactic and textual level, Yilin edition uses consecutive verbs to vividly describe certain events on discourse coherence and parallelism in order to represent the aesthetic connotation of the original text from the whole level. As sentiments and ideas, images and symbols are closely related with each other; therefore, the author analyzes the aesthetic representation from the description of figures and emotions. In terms of figures, Yilin edition satirizes the pedantic way of life and customs; in terms of emotions, Yilin edition exposes the lack of education and communication and aims to arouse readers' reflections on education and love. Compared with the aesthetic effect of the original text, it shows that Yilin edition of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer in 2008 preferably represents the ironical effect. It is feasible and significant to introduce translation aesthetics into the field of literature translation. The study on aesthetic representation of Yilin edition of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer has great theoretical and practical significance to translation practice, translation criticism and translation aesthetics.
