Abstract/Summary:
The Garlic Ballads is a novel by Mo Yan,China’s first Nobel Prize winner for literature. It gives a profound and unique description of the rural society and the fate of the disadvantaged groups in China in the last century. Moreover, the work vividly depicts the mannerisms, personalities and thoughts of various social figures at that time.As Mo Yan’s “official translator”,Goldblatt has a profound foundation in Chinese language and is familiar with Chinese culture. Therefore,Goldblatt’s translation attract more scholars to study. In recent years, scholars have studied and analyzed it from many aspects. However,up to now,no scholars have made an aesthetic analysis of the original text and the translated version of the Garlic Ballads from the perspective of translation aesthetics, which provides a research space for the author of this thesis. In this thesis, the author takes Professor Liu Miqing’s aesthetic theory of translation as a guide. On the basis of reading a lot of related books and literature of translation aesthetics, and considering the aesthetic characteristics showed in the original text and translated text of the Garlic Ballads, the author mainly analyzes the external form, internal form and integrated form of the literary beauty, and discusses Goldblatt how to reproduce the literary beauty,at the same time, explore the aesthetic creation and deficiency in translated text by contrasting the original text. The external form of language includes the phonological level, the lexical level and the syntactic level. The internal form includes the image and the integrated form includes the symbol of language. These three forms show a progressive relationship: the surface form of language--the internal image of literature--the symbolic meaning of literature.Images and symbols are the author’s expressions feelings and thoughts through the external form of language.Readers can use their imagination and feel the beauty of images and the meaning of symbol in literature through the expression of the external form of language. Therefore, the author firstly analyzes the text’s aesthetic reproduction, aesthetic creation and aesthetic deficiency respectively from the three levels in the external form of language, then analyzes the image expression from the internal form of language, and finally aesthetically analyzes the symbolic meaning from the integrated form. The thesis aims to make a comprehensive aesthetic analysis in three forms of literary beauty, from phone to text.Examples are given in each section to explanation.Through this study, the author finds that in addition to being loyal to the aesthetic features of the original language, the translator’s translation also has two situations: the creation of aesthetic features and the deficiency of aesthetic features. The whole language of the translated text is vivid, and the translated text has high aesthetic value on the linguistic level. The author hopes that this thesis can provide some references for the researchers of the Garlic Ballads and translation aesthetics.
