Report On The Translation Of Chapter 16 To Chapter 19 Of Our Life In China

Translation refers to a process in which the parole of one language is transferred into the parole of another language. Both explanation and paraphrase can be called translation so that translation is everywhere and every now and then. This paper is an English-Chinese translation report, and the original text for the translation is Our Life in China written by Helen S.C. Nevius. In the book, it describes the life and adventures by Mrs. Nevius accompanying with Mr. Nevius during his missionary work in China, which covers China's politic, economy, religion, philosophy, culture, society and other aspects. Since there hasn't been any Chinese version of the book up to now, the author of the paper selects Chapter XVI to Chapter XIX (about 17,000 words of the original)of it to translate, attempting to make readers know the impressions and influences of foreign missionaries to China during the middle of the 19th century.The translation report is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is an introduction to the purposes and significances of the translation report, and it sketches the process of translation at the same time; the second chapter is a brief introduction to the original text, including main contents of the text and analysis for the features of the original text; the third chapter is a translation theory and a translation principle, which mainly analyzes the Skopos Theory and the Skopos Rule by Hans Vermeer; the fourth part, the hardcore of the paper, is a case analysis, which uses methods of literal translation and free translation, amplification and omission, division and combination, word formation to conduct concrete analysis on the translated text based on the Skopos Theory and the Skopos Rule. In addition, the translation difficulties of the analysis on long and complicated sentences and cultural differences during translation are stated; the fifth chapter is a conclusion to the experiences and problems in translation process.In this paper, it takes the Skopos Theory of Hans Vermeer as the guiding theory and adopts various translation strategies to analyze so that the author can understand shortcomings of herself whereby to promote translation abilities and to provide valuable materials for others.
