A Report On The C-E Translation Of Online Fantasy Novel Overlord In Cultivation(Excerpt) Under The Guidance Of Skopos Theory

With the growing cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries,fantasy novels are becoming increasingly popular overseas,which in turn boosts cultural exchanges.The research of their English translation can enrich the translation methods and promote the exchange and development of network literature translation.Guided by Skopos theory from Germany Functional School,this translation report analyzes the C-E material of online fantasy novel Overlord in Cultivation(Excerpt).Considering that the text contains both fantasy-style words and culture-loaded words,and its sentences and paragraphs are short with many non-subject and run-on sentences as well as few contracted sentences,the report selects representative examples in the translated text from lexical,syntactic,and textual aspects,and analyzes the guiding role of Skopos theory in translation practice.Under the guidance of the three rules of Skopos theory,at the lexical level,the report,following fidelity and Skopos rule,uses translation methods like literal translation,amplification and omission to translate some fantasy-style words and culture-loaded words,so as to let the former come into readers’ minds in their original flavor,and help the latter realize the purpose of cultural communication.At the syntactic level,the report,basically obeying coherence rule,focuses on the non-subject,run-on and contracted sentences and chooses translation techniques of addition,voice conversion and linear translation so that the translated text conforms to the linguistic characteristics of the target language,thereby making it acceptable to the readers and meeting their reading habits.At the textual level,the report,also abiding by Skopos rule,adopts appropriate means to maintain the cohesion and coherence of the text,so that the fantasy culture can be translated to overseas countries in a complete and healthy way.As can be shown,Skopos theory can be used to guide the translation of fantasy novels;and this practice can not only broaden the application scope of the theory,but also provide references for translators in the field.
