The source text of this translation project is an excerpt from How Art Works:a Psychological Exploration. This book expounds issues about art from the perspectives of both psychology and philosophy, which helps readers to understand the role art plays in contemporary society and the influence of art on people. It is of great significance in studying impact of forms of arts on human psychology as well as popularizing knowledge about art and psychology. This book is an informative text concerning psychology, aiming to popularize scientific knowledge to non-professional ordinary readers, enhance their scientific literacy, and help them understand certain events in their daily life. Therefore, the author should ensure that scientific knowledge can be accurately transferred to target readers.Besides, the author should also ensure the translated text is easy to understand by avoiding difficult and obscure language. The main difficulties encountered by the author in the process of translation include a large number of culture-loaded words and professional terminologies, long and complex sentences, and unclear logic between sentences or paragraphs.Considering the above difficulties, this study explored specific solutions based on the Skopos Theory. It was found that in view of culture-loaded words and professional terminologies, adding in-text annotations and adding footnotes can effectively provide information that amateur readers need, reduce difficulties in comprehending the text for target readers and help them to overcome cultural and professional barriers. In view of a large number of long and complex sentences, the author adopted strategies of sentence organization and sentence splitting to make the target text conform to habits of expression for target readers and ensure readability of the target text.In view of unclear logics between sentences or paragraphs, adding logical connections can ensure intertextual coherence between the source text and the target text, and enable the target text to be faithful to the author and functions of the source text. This study employed the Skopos Theory(the Skopos rule, the coherence rule and the fidelity rule)to address problems in the English-to-Chinese translation of informative texts.Under the guidance of three rules of the Skopos Theory, case analysis was performed by employing translation strategies. In this way,the author aimed to provide reference for other translators in translating similar texts.
