A Study On C-E Translation Of Life From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

Life,a tragedy about difficult choices under a certain background,is a novella by the contemporary writer Lu Yao.It has drawn extensive attention since its publication.Many scholars began to study this work from different aspects.The translation of Life by Chloe Estep and the publication of it in 2019 help the circulation of this work in foreign countries.So far,Estep’s version is the only English text that could be found,and no one has ever studied the English text of Life by Chloe Estep from the perspective of Skopos Theory.Based on the Skopos Theory,this research studies the English translation of Life.In this research,the quantitative and qualitative research methods are used.The translation strategies,methods,and skills adopted by translator are analyzed in this thesis based on the three rules of Skopos Theory.The detailed analysis are as follows:under the skopos rule,this research mainly analyzes the translation strategies adopted by translator from the lexical level:including idioms,locutions,human body-related expressions,diet and daily life-related expressions,and kinship terms.In regard of the coherence rule,based on English and Chinese differences in expression habit,the translation methods are analyzed from sentence level and discourse level.In the fidelity rule,this thesis mainly analyzes strategies in the translation of folk songs,proverbs,and poems.Through this research,it can be found that in order to realize the communicative purpose and promote the spread of local culture of Shaanxi,the domestication strategy was mainly adopted by the translator.In order to make the target text coherent in semantics and confirm to English expressions,the methods such as literal translation,free translation,addition,omission,combination,and division were mainly used by the translator.Based on Skopos Theory,this paper studies the English text of Life and finds that this theory can be used to guide the study of English translation of regional literary works,which will also be conducive to the spread of regional literary works.
