With C hinese economy booming, Mandarin, as the official language of China, is gaining increasingly more attention across the world. Against the background of “Mandarin Craze”, Confucius Institutes came into existence, with the purpose of spreading the Chinese culture all over the globe. With 10- year development, their influence reaches every corner of the world, contributing greatly to the promotion of the Chinese language.However, languages are a vehicle of their respective cultures. Therefore, how to carry out language teaching in a variety of cultural backgrounds, how to enhance cultural exchanges between countries and how to boost the influence of Confucius Institutes throughout the world, these questions are so crucial that they deserve our constant exploration.The author of this study was employed as a volunteer teacher working in Addis Ababa Confucius Institute for two years. Having witnessed the preparation phase, the launching ceremony and the daily operation of Confucius C lassroom at Mekelle University, Ethiopia, along the way she have accumulated precious first-hand data and materials, which are demonstrated in this thesis. In terms of methodology, such scientific and analytic approaches as questionnaire analysis, field observation, literature review and interviewing are adopted.The thesis mainly revolves around teaching and operation modes used in Confucius Institute in Ethiopia. What set this research apart from the rest is that no previous study has ever tried to analyze the status quo of the Confucius Institute in Ethiopia. This research focuses its attention on teaching resources, faculty, enrollment and text materials which are related to the operation of Confucius Institute. Finally, a few suggestions are put forward which conce rn textbook localization, the incorporation of C hinese language into Ethiopian national tertiary education system and the training program for native Chinese language teachers.
