As an ancient novel depicting human,A New Account of the Tales of the World majorly records and narrates the speech and idle talks of scholar-bureaucrats in the end of Han dynasty and Wei and Jin dynasties, which has all long been an important material for researching Wei and Jin dynasties' history and culture. In Wei-Jin period,as the epoch of “human” awakening,at the same time the epoch of “literature” awakening, the main part of literary creation--literati had plenty of actions, while A New Account of the Tales of the World is just a book recording famous scholars in the Wei and Jin dynasty.Nevertheless, the words “scholar” and “bureaucrat” are usually used in their combination, and the title “scholar-bureaucrat”,as the representative of Chinese ancient literary class, has always been occupying the center of political and cultural creation. The worldly “bureaucrat” had the identity of “scholar”,while literati didn't simply refer to courtiers. It is thus clear that there has been a politically over-lap part of scholars and bureaucrats, but there were differences between these two groups in the culture dimension. This article tries singling out the identity of scholars to study the literati figures in A New Account of the Tales of the World. In the first chapter,it initially inspects the historical identities of official and scholar. It surveys the development of officials in different periods from the angles of development and transformation of social history and philology. As well,it studies the development process from scholar identity gradually emerging to becoming independent of official, then concludes the characteristics of scholar identity different from official, and defines scholar in A New Account of the Tales of the World according to the requirements to scholar identity. The second chapter specifically investigates the image of scholars in A New Account of the Tales of the World. On the one hand,it studies the shaping of literati in A New Account of the Tales of the World, that it takes the book using royal household to represent Cao Cao and his sons Cao Pi and Cao Zhi,using the aristocratic family to represent Wang Dao and Xie An,and using talented and famous scholars to represent Ji Kang,Liu Ling and Ruan Chi as objects of study,to present how A New Account of the Tales of the World shaped literati. On the other hand,it studies and summarizes the figures of literati respectively from external style and features and internal spirit. The third chapter discusses the idle talks of literati in A New Account of the Tales of the World. It studies the reason why literati's idle talks manifested the features of literati was because, apart from the differentiating and analyzing on metaphysical theory, from Zhengshi period idle talk to the Eastern Jin Dynasty, the literati paid more and more attention to poetry and prose as well as the individualized unscrambling towards metaphysical theory by literati themselves through sketching the conception of idle talk and historical detecting by stages, which represented that the idle talks gradually became a colloquial elegant literature. The forth chapter briefly expounds the literati images in Wei and Jin dynasties, especially the historic acceptance and researching representative of literati images in A New Account of the Tales of the World.
