This report is on the basis of the author's translation of a scientific text, Cold Comfort, written by Gudmund Hernes, the director of UNESCO's International Institute of Educational Planning in Paris(1995-2005).Cold Comfort outlines the process of climate change, expounds the responsibility of natural sciences and social sciences as well as their relation. It also explores the IPCC's report on climate change, the change in people's understanding and morality, ecological technology, some controversial issues and their possible solutions. Up till now, there has been no Chinese version about this work, so this translation project will provide the first one for Chinese readers. This report makes an introduction to the background, significance and the structure of this report as well as the text Cold Comfort and its author, analyzes the linguistic and stylistic features of the source text, and gives a systematic review about the translation practice from the aspects of pre-translation preparation, translation process as well as post-translation summary. The translation practice is conducted under the guidance of Skopos Theory, which focuses mainly on skopos rule, coherence rule and loyalty rule in translation, and specific translation methods(literal and liberal translation, splitting and recasting, adding and omitting, and etc) are developed with case studies in the translation at lexical, syntactic and discourse level. Finally, translation evaluation is made and a conclusion is drawn to summarize the gains and problems in the translation process in order to accumulate experience for future translation practice and studies.
