This paper is a translation project report on Discovering the Humanities(Chapter IX), written by Professor Henry M. Sayre and published by Pearson Education Inc. in 2012. With the rapid development of economy, people in China start to pay more attention to the importance of culture. This book adopts a narrative storytelling approach to introduce humanities, which is very appealing. Thus, students can have better understanding of history, architecture, music, paintings and so on through this book.Since this book is translated for Chinese students, so the translator mainly adopts free translation when dealing with long and complex sentences to make the sentence fluent and expressive. In general, the translator translates this book under the guidance of the strategy of domestication to make the target text easier understood by Chinese readers. As for translation skills, the translator mainly uses skills like amplification to maintain the original meaning the author of the book wants to express. To address these difficulties, the translator applies Skopos theory in the course of text translation. This theory contains four rules, namely the Skopos rule, the coherence rule, the fidelity rule(put forward by Vermeer) and the loyalty principle(put forward by Nord). The report also lists abundant examples in which these translation methods are employed and summarizes experience, lessons and problems of the project, which is a good example for book translation in the field of humanities.
