A Report On Simulated Interpreting Of ‘Baidu World Conference' (2015)

Interpreting is a process that an interpreter receives source language information and then translates it into target language orally. According to the work mode, interpreting comprises consecutive interpreting and simultaneous interpreting, while the former one is more widely used in cross-cultural activities. Consecutive interpreting is a mode in which an interpreter begins interpreting of a complete message after the speaker stops producing the source utterance. This report is based on Baidu World Conference(2015), by which the author conducts a consecutive interpreting practice by simulating a live interpreting site. It lasts about two hours. The two selected spokesmen give speeches in Chinese, which covers the field of science and technology, economy and everyday life. Meanwhile, the speeches also involve some computer terminologies and proper nouns, which make the interpreting more difficult. The author analyzes many problems that occurred in the process of simulated consecutive interpreting and adopt several interpreting strategies, such as syntactic linearity, omission, amplification, under the guide of Functional Translation Theory. At last, the author draws some experience and lessons from this practice. This report consists of four chapters. The first chapter is the description of the interpreting task, which provides a brief introduction to the background and nature of the task and the requirements of the interpreter. The second chapter is the description of interpreting process, which introduces interpreting preparation, actual interpreting process and reviews after interpreting. The third chapter is a case study, which describes the different interpreting strategies and solutions used for figuring out the key, puzzling and doubtful points in the course of interpreting. The fourth chapter is the summary of interpreting practice, which is mainly about the reflection of problems during interpreting and the inspiration to interpreting learning in future. The significance of this report lies in that the author analyzes the mistakes and shortcomings made in practice by simulating a consecutive interpreting and then puts forward some effective strategies in order to serve as guidance to interpreting practices in future.
