Abstract/Summary:
Political biography always involves typical or important speeches of politicians. Political speech refers to the positions, opinions and propositions of politicians to internal affairs and diplomatic relations, which is featured with a strong appeal and focuses on audiences’ response. There are now more and more works on political speech, thus the study on translating political speech is nothing new. Some people studied it from the perspective of ideology theory and some studied it from the perspective of adaptation theory. In translating political speech, the style of the speakers’ and readers’ response is very important, which is basically the same with the spirit of the functional equivalence theory put forward by Nida. Functional equivalence gives priority to readers’ response and its goal is that target language readers’response toward translation is basically the same as source language readers’ response toward original. Thus, functional equivalence theory plays a guiding role in translation of political speeches. This report is mainly to discuss the guiding role of the functional equivalence theory in translating political speech. To achieve this goal, the author analyzed corresponding translation strategies when translating parenthesis, long sentences, verbalization words and affirmation and negative components. The functional equivalence theory can enhance the readability to some extent and meet readers’ demand for understanding. So the author hopes that the study can provide some references to other translations in similar cases in the future.
