| Big data provides a new way for people to view the world. By collecting and analyzing data,people can make many discoveries, thus driving the development in various fields. Big data plays an increasingly important role in many fields, such as finance, communications, military affairs, politics and culture. The research and application of big data in cultural field are still at initial stage all over the world, especially in China. Now, only a small number of scholars start applying big data in their academic researches while most scholars may have knowledge of big data but don’t know how to take advantage of it. Therefore, the selected topic about the application of big data in cultural field is new to scholars in China.Chinese books about researches of big data in cultural field are few in number. Thus the translation of English books about researches and application of big data in cultural field is of practical significance. The book the writer chooses to translate is named Uncharted: Big Data as a Lens on Human Culture, which elaborates research results on numerous books on Google with the aid of a new search tool called Ngram Viewer. In this report, the writer chooses chapters 1and 7 of this book as a translation material and displays her translation principle and strategies employed.The report details an introduction of the translation task and the translation process and provides case analyses.
