Objectives: The aim was to observe and analyze the curative efficacy and safety of composite resin in restoration of vertical food impaction after using inter-oral elastic separator.Method: 28 participants were recruited for this prospective study from January 2016 to January 2017.All of them were treated by light-curing composite resin with the aid of Beyond matrix system after obtained enough amount of operation space between the teeth by the orthodontic separator. The proximal contact tightness(PCT)had been recorded using aluminum strips of different thicknesses right after the filling and at 1 month,3 months,6 months and 12 months after the filling. The periodontal and pulp health conditions as well as the satisfaction of the patients were checked at the meantime.Statistical analyses were performed to estimate the prevalence rate of proximal contact loss(PCL)and its influential factors.Result: No endodontic or periodontic complications were fond in all 59 teeth. The immediate PCT was improved in all cases. After 1 month the recurrence rate of VFI is 3.75% and 7.1% after 3 months, then 14.42% at 6 months. The recurrence rate was stable from 6 months to 12 months.Bone level of the adjacent teeth, the position of the teeth were statistically significant factors, when analyzed by the recurrence rate using the log-rank test of the Kaplan–Meier method(P < 0.05)According to the Cox proportional hazard regression analysis, the bone level of adjacent teeth and teeth position were revealed to be statistically significant(P < 0.05).Conclusion: The combination of orthodontic elastic separator and composite resin is a method that could effectively relief or cure the vertical food impaction. It is minimal invasive to the tooth structure and the periodontal structure with a good short-term efficacy. The long-term effect remains to be seen.
