Objective This study aimed to investigate the associations between resting heart rate and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in Chinese population.Method The participants included in the present study were recruited from the cohort study of PMMJS,which was established to analyze the epidemiologic characteristics of metabolic diseases in Jiangsu,China.Totally 20343 person were surveyed.Excluding alcohol consumption, tumor, liver disease, abnormal heart rate and other diseases,12,431 subjects were included in this study. And the resting heart rate level was divided into three tertiles(≤ 72 bmp,73bpm-80 bpm,≥81bpm).The unpaired t-test,Chi-square test and rank sum test were used to compare the characteristics of participants. The trend χ2 test and logistic regression was used in the association between resting heart rate and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.Results1.Among 12341 participants,1690 were found nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. The prevalence rate was 13.60%.The general characteristics of participants in all or with different levels of resting heart rate, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease patients had a higher level of age, systolic blood pressure, diastolic pressure,TC,TG,LDL – C,BMI and fasting glucose, higher prevalence of hypertension, overweight, obesity, abdominal obesity, dyslipidemia, hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, low density lipoprotein, low high density lipoprotein hematic disease and diabetes, and lower level of HDL – C than non-nonalcoholic fatty liver disease participants(P<0.05).2.The results of association between resting heart rate and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease showed that the prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver tended to increase with resting heart rate increasing(trend χ2 =7.05,P=0.008).Moreover,the significant association between resting heart rate and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease was not influenced even after adjusting for the additional variables including sex, age, hypertension, diabetes and dyslipidemia [OR(95%CI)Medium vs Low: 1.16(1.01-1.33);OR(95%CI)High vs Low: 1.25(1.08-1.44)].3.The results of stratified analysis showed that the significant associations between resting heart rate and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease were observed in females, individuals with ≥ 45 years, participants with hypertension, participants without diabetes, hyperlipidemia, hypertriglyceridemia and low high density lipoprotein hematic disease(P<0.05).Additionally,elevated resting heart rate was apparently linked to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in the individuals with or without overweight, obesity or abdominal obesity(P<0.05).4.After excluding of participants with hypertension, diabetes and anti-hyperlipidemia medicine history, the sensitivity analysis showed that resting heart rate remains significantly associated with NAFLD,even after the adjusting for the additional variables, including age, gender, overweight, obesity, abdominal obesity and dyslipidemia [OR(95%CI)Medium vs Low: 1.19(1.02-1.45);OR(95%CI)High vs Low:1.25(1.04-1.58)].Conclusion Resting heart rate was significantly associated NAFLD independent of traditional risk factors such as sex, age, hypertension, diabetes and dyslipidemia.
