Clinical Features Of Primary Stabbing Headache And Field Testing Of The 3rd Beta Edition Of International Classification Of Headache Disorders

Objectives: To study the clinical features and outcome of primary stabbing headache(PSH),and test the 3rd beta edition of International Classification of Headache Disorders(ICHD-3beta).Methods: Systematically studied PSH patients referred to the headache clinic in the First Affiliated Hospital Of Chongqing Medical University from January 2014 to December 2015 according to the diagnostic criteria of ICHD-3beta.Data of demographic characteristics,clinical features and treatment outcome of PSH patients were investigated and ICHD-3beta diagnostic criteria was evaluated.Results: Of 2784 participating patients with headache,53 were diagnosed with PSH.Of the 53 PSH patients,37(69.8%)were females and 17(30.1%)were males with the average age of(45.08±12.55)years at oneset.The occipital cerebral region was reported as most commom area and only 20 patients(37.7%)felt the head pain exclusively in the distribution of the first division of the trigeminal nerve.One stabbing headache of most patients(84.9%)attacked lasting less than 5s.No patient reported any cranial autonomic symtoms.30.2% of our patients complained of accompanying symptoms,and phonophobia(30.2%),dizzy(13.2%),photophobia(7.5%)and nausea(5.7%)were common.Only 16 patients fulfilled the diagnostic criteria of 2nd edition of International Classification of Headache Disorders.Most patients had remission(at least 50% improvement)after treatment.Conclusion: The clinical characteristics of our PSH patients were similar with previous study.It s meaningful that the ICHD-3beta revised of the diagnostic criteria about stab location and accompanying symptoms for PSH.And the ICHD-3beta was more practical than ICHD-2.The curative effect for PSH in clinical seemed satisfactory.
