Phantom limb pain is most commonly seen after limb amputation, but similar syndromes can occur with removal of other body parts including breasts, testicles, bladders, rectums, teeth, tongues, and eyes.Since the first medical description of post-amputation phenomena reported by Ambrose Pare in 1551,persistent phantom pain syndromes have been well recognized. The phantom limb was not again referred to in the literature until its masterly description by Weir Mitchell in 1871.The incidence of phanto m limb pain was reported about 50-80% of the PLP.In the patients with phantom limbpain,18% of the patients demanded a termination of labors,33.5% of the patients affected their word and learning,82% of the patients had insomnia,43% reduced social ability,45% affected daily activities. Therefore phantom limb pain brings endless pain to the patient. In recently years, phantom limb pain after amputation gradually causes social attention.Until today, there is no unified recognition about the etiopathogenesis and treatments of phantom limb pain. This paper introduces the main performance, pathogenesis and clinical treatment of phantom limb pain.
