Objective: The purposes of this study were to investigate the correlations between benign infantile convulsions associated with mild gastroenteritis(BICE)and rotavirus. In addition, making comparison and analysis of clinical characteristics and laboratory test results between patients accompany with rotavirus infection and non rotavirus infection. Methods:The study subjects consisted of 278 children diagnosed with BICE in our hospital from January 2008 to October 2016,which were divided into HRV positive and negative group according to the results of antigen detection of stool rotavirus(human rotavirus,HRV).The clinical data of all subjects were retrospectively analyzed. The differences of age, gender, clinical manifestations, blood routine, liver function, electrolytes and especially in convulsion between the two groups were compared.Furthermore, the patients were followed up for 6~48 months after discharge and the prognosis was analyzed retrospectively. Results: 278 subjects consisted of 42 cases of HRV positive patients(15.1%)and 236 cases of negative patients(84.9%).Moreover,there were 20 male patients(47.6%)and22 female patients(52.4%)in the HRV positive group. The age of onset was 9 ~ 28months(average 16.5±4.2 months). There were 31 cases(73.8.%)onset in autumn and winter,11 cases(26.2%)onset in spring and summer,20 cases(47.6%)onset with fever and 22 cases(52.4%)onset no fever. In addition,22 cases(52.4%),18 cases(42.8%)and2 cases(4.8%)were diagnosed with diarrhea accompany with vomiting, diarrhea and vomiting, respectively.Generalized seizures occurred in 37 patients(88.1%)and partial seizures occurred in 5 patients(11.9%).The proportions of the first seizure of patients in first, second, third, forth and fifth day were 3 cases(7.1%),10 cases(23.8%),25 cases(59.6%),3 cases(7.1%)and1 case(2.4%).The frequencies of seizures with one time, two, three, four and greater than or equal to 5 times were occurred in 4 cases(9.5%),24cases(57.2%),9 cases(25.4%),3 cases(7.1%)and 2 cases(4.8%),respectively.Children with convulsions occurred 101 times contained 42 cases, with an average of 2.40 times. The durations of the seizure were within 1,1~5 and beyond 5 minute consisted of 32times(31.7%),68 times(67.3%)and 1 times(1%),respectively.There were 110 male patients(46.6%)and 126 female patients(53.4%)in the HRV negative group. The ages of onset were 8 ~ 34 months with an average of 17.8±5.1months.There were 176 cases(74.6.%)onset in autumn and winter,60 cases(25.4%)onset in spring and summer,45cases(19.1%)onset with fever and 191 cases(80.9%)onset no fever.Moreover,118 cases(50.0%),110cases(46.4%),and 8 cases(3.6%)were diagnosed with diarrhea accompany with vomiting, diarrhea and vomiting, respectively.Generalized seizures occurred in 215 patients(91.1%)and partial seizures in 21 patients(8.9%).The proportions of the first seizure of patients in first, second, third, forth and fifth day were 11 cases(4.7%),62 cases(26.3%),137 cases(58.0%),20 cases(8.5%)and6 cases(2.5%).The frequencies of seizures with one time, two, three, four and greater than or equal to 5 times were occurred in 25 cases(10.6%),132 cases(55.9%),52cases(22.0%),15 cases(6.4%)and 12 cases(5.1%),respectively.Children with convulsions occurred 571 times contained 236 cases, with an average of 2.42 times. The durations of the seizure were within 1,1~5 and beyond 5 minute consisted of 170 times(29.8%),396 times(69.4%)and 5 times(0.8%),respectively.Comparing the clinical characteristics between the two groups, the positive group was more likely to have fever than the negative group, and the differences have statistical significance(p<0.05).However,there were no significant differences in age, sex, vomiting, diarrhea and convulsion in the onset of disease(p>0.05).In the laboratory examination, serum sodium, serum calcium of the positive group were significantly lower than those of negative group. However, the differences of other indicators have no statistical significance(p<0.05).All the patients were followed up and no neurological sequelae were found in patients after discharge.Only 6 patients(2.16%)were suffered from recurrence. In addition, one patient(0.36%)was suffered from recurrent febrile convulsion and converted to epilepsy. Conclusion: BICE can be caused by rotavirus; The rotavirus infected group are more likely to have fever than that of non-rotavirus infected group, which often accompanied by decrease in serum sodium and serum calcium concentration, but has not yet lead to hyponatremia and hypocalcemia which can cause convulsions. The seizures of BICE occurred from one to five days during the onset period, generally in the third day,and most of the patients show repeated seizures or clusters of seizures. This disease has a good prognosis.Furthermore,no neurological sequelae was found in patients, except for a small number of children have the phenomenon of recurrence.
