Objective:To explore the clinical manifestations and prognosis of benign infantile convulsions associated with mild gastroenteritis(BICE).Methods:From February2008to February2013,63cases of BICE and69cases of acute gastroenteritis were studied and followed up for2to74months. Clinical manifestations, laboratory investigations, and prognosis were reviewed and analyzed. We analyzed clinical manifestations and laboratory investigations between12cases with human rotavirus (HRV) antigen-positive and37cases with HRV antigen-negative, and the differences between63cases of BICE and69cases of acute gastroenteritis.Results:63cases of BICE aged from6to35months which contained27males and36females were observed.37cases attacked in fall,22cases in winter. There were15cases the first convulsions occurred in the1st day of diarrhea,23cases in the2nd day,21cases in the3rd day and4cases in the4th day. All of the cases were taken electroencephalogram,4cases were slightly abnormal,1case was obviously abnormal.58cases were generalized tonic-clonic seizures,5cases were partial seizures. Neurological examinations of all cases were normal. The other laboratory investigations, such as blood routine, blood biochemical, urine routine, stool routine, cerebrospinal fluid and CT scans prompted no obvious abnormality.49cases’s stool samples were tested for HRV antigen,12of which were positive. Serum sodium and calcium in HRV-positive group were lower than HRV-negative group (131.31±1.94vs133.49±2.92,2.24±0.23vs2.43±0.15,P<0.05). Serum sodium in BICE group were lower than the acute gastroenteritis group (133.03±3.08vs135.37±4.50,P<0.05).4cases were recurrent during the follow-up, one of which was diagnosed as febrile convulsion, none develop into Epilepsy.Conclusion:1. It is suggested that the disease may be mainly associated with rotavirus infection based on its clinical manifestations and other examinations.2. There is a good prognosis of the disease after treatment and treatment.
