Background and ObjectivesAIDS is developing fast and becoming increasingly more prevalent in China. With the transmission of AIDS and drastic increase in number of cases with AIDS arising from men s sexual intercourse with the same sex,AIDS tends to be extremely epidemic among men who have sex with men(MSM).It is quite common that MSM have several sex partners, commit sexual behaviors in diverse manners and seldom use condoms,so they are major groups of HIV infection and transmission. As social cultures became more and more diversified, homosexuality has become a little more acceptable in China, where more and more men who have sex with men try to satisfy their emotional needs.Besides,a subculture has developed that these men gradually advocate having regular sexual partners.Likewise, regular sex partners are important for reducing sex partners, decreasing casual sexual behaviors, preventing and controlling prevalence of HIV among MSM.Owing to many factors such as homosexual orientation and high risk of AIDS infection,MSM are always unacceptable by the society.Being subject to more discrimination and greater pressure from their surroundings, they have particularly severe problems about mental health. To understand whether MSM have regular male sex partners, analyze factorsconcerning these men s selection of their regular sex partners and discuss relationships between their possession of regular sex partners and their current mental heath, related surveys are performed in Nanning.MethodThis study was conducted by means of cross-sectional survey,445 MSMs who aged 16 years or older and had homosexual sex in the past six months were recruited by the sampling method of snowball in Nanning,Guangxi.Anonymous questionnaires were conducted on the subjects and 440 valid questionnaires were obtained. The contents of the questionnaire include the social demographic characteristics of the participants, sexual characteristics,HIV/AIDS intervention services, living environment, psychological status and so on.The self-rating depression scale,self-rating anxiety scale and life satisfaction scale were used to investigate the psychological status of MSM.The subjects were divided into two groups: male regular partner and non-male regular partner group. The proportion of male fixed partner among MSM population in Nanning city was surveyed and the influencing factors were analyzed, the psychological characteristics including depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms and life satisfaction were investigated. The chi-square test,t-test and multivariate logistic regression analysis were used to analyze the data.ResultsThe proportion of MSM who had male fixed partners was 35.7%(157/440),and that of non-fixed partners MSM was 64.3%(283/440)in the survey. The age of the participants were between 16 and 48 years old and the mean age was(23.12±5.76)years.The proportion of the subjects was 83.2%(366/440)under the age of 35,67.3%(296/440)had college or higher education, and the proportion of non-manual workers was 49.7%(219/440),44.5%(196/440)were unmarried, accounting for 61.4%(270/440)living in the city for more than one year,52.5%(231/440)identified their sexual orientation as homosexual amongparticipants. The univariate analysis showed that the factors(P<0.05)influencing the status of possessing a male fixed companion of MSM including age, marital status, personal monthly income, city residence time, first male sex behavior age, time of first homosexual sex behavior by now,HIV antibody detection status, the number of online friends who had homosexual sex behavior with participant, joining the MSM companion chatting group status, receiving HIV/AIDS intervention status, the last time to accept the intervention measures, the status of living alone in the last 1 year. Results of Multiple Logistic Regression showed that local residence time?1year(OR=2.35,95%CI=1.56~3.81),the first male sex behavior was?3 years by now(OR=2.86,95%CI=1.32 ~ 6.23),living alone nearly a year(OR=5.87,95%CI=3.80 ~ 9.06),individual monthly income?3000 yuan(OR=3.24,95%CI=1.15~5.62),the above factors increase the possibility that MSM has a fixed partner.Have a number of sexual partners finding on the network?10(OR=0.28,95%CI=0.15 ~ 0.58),participating MSM companion chat group(OR=0.08,95%CI=0.04~0.16)will reduce the possibility of MSM looking for a fixed homosexual sexual partners.A survey of the mental health status of MSM showed that 43.5%(185/435)of the subjects had depressive symptoms and 37.0%(158/427)had anxiety symptoms. The proportion of symptoms of depression and anxiety of MSM without primary sexual partners(47.5%,42.2%)was higher than that of MSM with one(33.5%,27.3% respectively),the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05);The SDS score(35.73± 4.07)of MSM with primary sexual partners was higher than that of who has no one(35.73±4.07),a life satisfaction score of MSM with primary sexual partners(15.75±1.71)was higher than those without male fixed companion(13.55 ± 2.46).ConclusionThe survey found that the proportion of MSM with male fixed partners was35.7% in Nanning. The associated factors influenced the status of possessing male fixed partners of MSN including: city residence time, time of first homosexual sex behavior by now,the number of online friends who had homosexual sex behavior with participant, joining the MSM companion chatting group status, the status of living alone in the last 1 year, personal monthly income. We should focus on the factors that affect MSM to find a fixed partner in the future, and take effective interventions to promote the stability of relationship between MSM and their partners, reduce the incidence of high-risk behavior of AIDS.There is a common phenomenon of common psychological among MSM population, the MSM without a male sexual partners had a higher proportion of anxiety and depression symptoms than those who have a fixed sexual partners and the latter had a higher degree of satisfaction with life.We need to strengthen those MSM who has no fixed sexual partners with social and psychological support, meanwhile creating a tolerant social environment for MSM,increasing the chance of MSM developing a fixed partner relationship, providing opportunities for MSM to develop fixed companions.
