Objective: To establish a method for assessing chronological age of living people, based on the relationship between age and length of mandibular ramus on lateral cephalometric radiographs. Methods: Mandibular ramus length(Co-Go)of 347(171males and 176 females)lateral cephalometric radiographs from Han adolescents(between 6 and 20 years of age)in XinJiang, were measured using Winceph 8.0 software. The statistical database and formula to determine choronological age was calculated using linear regression analysis with the help of SPSS 21.0 statistical analysis software. Results: There is no statistically significant difference between gender at 5-16 years old(P >0.05),The difference we found was from 16 up to 20 years of age(P <0.05).Correlation between the ramus length and chronological age was confirmed by employing the static test of Pearson which showed r=0.83 with P <0.001.So the linear regression equation to calculate the choronological age was estabilished.6-15 years old males and females:?=4.944x-14.634,R2=0.659.males aged 16–20years:?=1.549x+8.457,R2=0.103.females aged 6–20 years: ?=1.857x+7.488,R2=0.136.Conclusion: The calculated equation is a reliable method of choronological age estimation using mandibular ramus length and the presented age.It can offer reference values for forensic odontology in an age estimation of living population at the Xinjiang,China.
