Objective Different geographical and ethnic makes different results between chronic periodontitis and matrix metalloproteinase-9.This study investigated the association between matrix metalloproteinase-9 polymorphisms and chronic periodontitis among Uygur adults in the Moyu area of Xinjiang.Method The buccal swabs of 292 subjects were randomly selected from epidemiological investigation of Uygur adults in Moyu Contry from March to April 2013,including 196 CP patients and 97 healthy controls.We obtained genomic DNA from the subjects and determined the genotype distribution and allele frequency of matrix metalloproteinase-9 using the technique of polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism(PCR-RFLP).Results Significant differences were found between healthy controls and mild periodontitis as well as mild periodontitis and moderate to severe periodontitis in the MMP-9 1562C/T CC genotype expression(P=0.002,P<0.001).As for CT genotype expression,remarkable differences were observed not only in healthy controls and mild periodontitis but also in mild periodontitis and moderate to severe periodontitis;Besides healthy controls and mild periodontitis,mild periodontitis and moderate to severe periodontitis show statistically significant difference in allele frequency(P=0.012,P=0.004).Logistic analysis showed that age under 35 years old was the protective factor of CP(OR=0.061,95%CI=0.035-0.108,P<0.001)while the male and CT genotype may be the risk factors of CP(OR=2.392,95%CI=1.496-3.819,P<0.001;OR=1.280,95%CI=0.794-2.067,P=0.031).Conclusion The susceptibility to chronic periodontitis among Uygur adults in Moyu County of Xinjiang is related to the age and gender and polymorphism of matrix metalloproteinase-9,the age over 35 years old and male as well as CT genotype may be the risk factors of CP in Uygur adults.
