BackgroundChondroblastoma is a rare benign tumor with occurrence of epiphyseal. But its local recurrence rate is high, and cases with distant metastasis can also be seen. After the treatment of traditional surgery including lesion curettage combined bone graft or bone cement, there is still a certain recurrence rate.Intraoperative adjuvant therapy can effectively reduce the recurrence rate of chondroblastoma. However, large sample cases of traditional surgery combined with intraoperative treatment for chondroblastoma are seldom reported.ObjectiveTo investigate the clinical efficacy of adjuvant therapy combined with traditional surgery for chondroblastoma.MethodsA retrospective analysis of the surgical treatment of 62 patients with chondroblastoma in our hospital, from August 2005 to April 2016.All patients underwent traditional surgery combined with adjuvant therapy after routine radiographic evaluation. All cases were finally confirmed by postoperative routine pathology.During the follow-up,we pay more attention on the local recurrence, bone graft healing and the limb length in patients with unclosed epiphyseal.Results48 patients were male,14 were female and the average age was 19 years old(ranging from 9 to 48).Lesion of 27 cases is located in femur,19 cases in tibia,3 cases respectively in patella, humerus, calcaneus and acetabulum,1 case respectively in Talus, metatarsus, ilium and scapula. The follow-up period ranges from 6 months to 134 months, with an average of 54 months. At the end of follow-up,recurrence was observed only in one case located in the upper tibia. This patient was firstly treated by tumor curettage combined allogeneic bone graft, and posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. After 17 months, this patient had local recurrence, and received tumor curettage combined with bone cement graft. No recurrence was found in the following 5 months. The local recurrence rate is 1.6%.Other patients had no local recurrence and distant metastasis.1 case located in the upper tibia experienced mild pain during daily activities, but could independently complete the daily activities. The remaining patients had no pain, and no restriction of daily work and activities.1 case had limb shortening 2cm after operation, but no effect on daily activity. The others had no obvious limb shortening, and good daily activities.ConclusionThe combination of traditional surgery and adjuvant therapy for chondroblastoma can achieve a good outcome.
