An Esthetic Evaluation Of The Soft Tissue Of Lips And Nose And Chin In Beautiful Females

With increasing frequency of interpersonal communications in the modern society,beauty of looks has been playing more and more significant part in people's daily life since it can bring people both mental satisfactions and various advantages. It has been indicated in Jacobson's research that people endowed with beauty of looks are much easier to be recognized by the society and thus obtain more job opportunities and heterosexual attractions. In the clinic orthodontic treatment, it is the significant objective of orthodontic physicians as well the final requirement of the patients to ultimately accomplish beauty of looks on soft tissue level. Therefore, an aesthetic standard is required to provide guidance in the process of orthodontic treatment. It has been shown in a research that 1/3 region below the face is more capable to highlight personality characteristics of facial aesthetics. Besides, difference of facial profile among crowds focus on the 1/3 region below the face, that's, relations between nose,lips and chins. As a result, 1/3 region below the face is of vital importance for facial soft tissue profile. In the past days, identifications on facial profile aesthetics of the patients are mainly depended on the aesthetic experience of the physicians. However,sometimes therapeutic outcome can only reach the standard of beauty appreciation in medical aspects but can't satisfy aesthetic idea of the public. This research is aimed at discussion on aesthetic standard of the public so as to study the aesthetic characteristics of soft tissue in the 1/3 region below the faces of Chinese beautiful females of the Han nationality and try to seek mutual relationship between one another. Through investigations of clinical physicians and the public's evaluations on facial profile of soft tissue of Chinese beautiful females, it is expected to acquire characteristic indicator for facial profile of soft tissue with certain guiding significances to clinical orthodontic physicians and orthognathous physicians of surgical department in this subject, which contributes to clinical diagnosis and treatment-plan design.Objective: visual analogue scale questionnaire on soft tissue of upper and lower lip,nasal part and chins for Chinese beautiful females shall be prepared. Investigations shall be carried out on the soft tissue in the 1/3 region below the face of the beautiful females by dental clinicians, specialist orthodontic physicians and the average persons. Furthermore, analysis and evaluations on lips, noses and chins aesthetic characteristic difference of the three shall be conducted so as to provide aesthetics data reference for clinical orthodontics, orthognathous and facial plastic surgery on the basis of public appreciation of beauty.Material and method:(1) Young beautiful females based on public appreciation of beauty shall be selected, and their photos in side positions shall be taken. Then, the side-position photos shall be opened with Adobe Photoshop CS4 software and then the anteroposterior position relations on the beauty-appreciation plane(Line E) shall be respectively changed so as to produce a series of side-position photo and prepare relevant position questionnaire.(2) Reliability and validity of the questionnaire shall be checked and evaluated and aesthetic-idea investigation on facial profile shall be carried out by 50 dental clinicians and 350 average persons by means of the questionnaire.(3) Database shall be established with Microsoft Excel 2007 software for data management and statistic analysis shall be conducted with SPSSl5.0statistical package so as to respectively analyze aesthetic-idea difference by various crowds on different regions of soft tissue below 1/3 face of the same beautiful female.Results:(1)There were significant differences in the esthetic scores of the evaluation of the soft tissue of lips and nose and chin in beautiful females for both orthodontists and laypeople.( orthodontists: P=0.000,P<0.01; laypeople:P=0.000,P<0.01).(2) The orthodontists and laypeople are both like the situation of UL,LL,Prn and Pos in line or UL and LL just a little distance in front of the line which compsed by Prn and Pos.When the UL is in front of the E line with LL besides the UL, the scores were surposed to get down.(3) The orthodontists and laypeople are both like the nasal tip in a sharp way. The scores were surposed to get down with the increasing of the absolute value of the distance made by the movement of the nasal tip.(4)The orthodontists and laypeople are both like chin to be a little adduction.Within a certain range,the scores were surposed to increase with the increasing of the adduction.While the chin is under the protrusion way, the scores were surposed to get down with the increasing of the protrusion.Conclusion:1?The 3 visual analogue scale(VAS) questionnaires by our institute were all with good reliability, validity and repeatability, with advantages including simplicity, high efficiency and cost saving, and could be widely used in facial aesthetic investigations. 2?The coordination of nose, lips and chin is an important symbol of lateral facial profile aesthetics, and the lower 1/3 of the facial profile reflects the personal features of facial aesthetics. Studies have shown that the coordination of nose, lips and chin is one of the features of good looking people with good facial aesthetics. The results of the survey showed that there may be complex and unique coordination and correlations of the ratios of the lower 1/3 of the facial profile. The facial structure with the nose tip slightly sharp and pointing up, the full chin slightly inclining, together with the lip papilla with a straight lines or internal obtuse angles with the nose tip and the pogonion is more consistent with the popular aesthetics of Chinese. This study suggests that the causal relationship among all the ratios and indexes need to be further studied, as well as the laws of facial aesthetics expressed in form of ideal mathematical methods. Only the right proportion can lead to aesthetic sense of beauty, and the investigation on the mechanism of such complex and subtle proportions will remain as a profound topic.
