Objectives This paper reveals the relation between the private hospitals’ social performance and the pressure of institutional legitimacy through the research on different private hospitals with regulative legitimacy, normative legitimacy and cognitive legitimacy. The goal is to provide suggestions of encourage private hospitals to undertake more social responsibilities.Methods 1 Document research: It reviewed the document domestic and overseas about hospitals social responsibilities and found some index to evaluate it to research the factors affecting the level of social responsibilities.2 Questionnaire survey: it include the follow contents:(1)The basic condition of the researched hospitals such as its scale,its financial condition.(2)The Organizational Legitimacy of the hospitals includes level of regulative legitimacy, normative legitimacy and cognitive legitimacy.(3)The hospitals social performance. 3 Date processing and analysis: it uses EXCEL and SPSS to process and analysis the data. Descriptive statistical analysis and regression analysis are used in the paper.Results Most of supposes in this research have been proved. Regulative legitimacy normative legitimacy and cognitive legitimacy have different effects on private hospitals social performance, and the effect level of regulative legitimacy significance is most high. Social strategic response plays a partly intermediate role between Regulative legitimacy normative legitimacy and social performance.Conclusions Based on the above results, this research throw out some suggestions to promote the private hospitals social performance. Make good use of stakeholders of governments, communities, NGOs and medias, Promote the power of government regulation, normative legitimacy and cognitive legitimacy.
