Objective: To investigate the changes of plasma interleukin-9(IL-9) levels and clinical significance of children with acute henoch-schonlein purpura(HSP).Methods: The study group was 79 cases of new hospitalized children with henoch-schonlein purpura. All HSP patients were divided into purpura nephritis(HSPN)and none nephritis group(NHSPN) according to wheather there are kindey damage or not.Twenty-eight cases of outpatients were selected as the control group. The levels of interleukin 9 and interleukin 4 in plasma of each group were determined by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. Results: The plasma IL-9 level of children with henoch-schonlein purpura was(28.32 6.97) pg / ml, Which was significantly higher than the healthy controls(23.92 5.91) pg /ml,(t=2.98,p<0.05). The plasma IL-4 concentration of children with HSP was(93.86 25.35) pg / ml, Which was also significantly higher than the healthy controls(77.75 15.90) pg / ml,(t = 3.01, p <0.05). The plasma IL-9 and IL-4 level of the HSPN group increased significantly compared with the control group(p <0.05), the difference was statistically significant. The plasma IL-9 level of the HSPN group increased significantly compared with the NHSPN group(p <0.05), and the difference was statistically significant. However the plasma IL-4 concentration of children in HSPN group was not significantly higher than that of NHSPN group(p <0.05), and the difference was not statistically significant. Linear correlation analysis showed that plasma IL-9 levels were significantly positively correlated with IL-4 levels(r=0.298, p<0.05) in children with HSP.Conclusion: The plasma level of IL-9 in HSP patients is significantly increased, especially in children with purpura nephritis. Changes of plasma IL-9 levels in HSP patients are significantly positively correlated with the level of IL-4. The results suggest that the abnormal changes of IL-9 may play an important role in the pathogenesis of HSP,especially in the pathogenesis of purpura nephritis.
