Objective: To establish experimental model of the sciatic nerve fracture in rats.A group was given the treatment of LIPUS;the other group was given false treatment. The experimental basis was provided for clinical application with LIPUS in the treatment of muscle atrophy. Methods: 30 healthy adult rats were randomly devided into two group with 15 rats in each group. The rats with sciatic nerve fracture were taken as model. after the success of the anesthetize of adult male SD rats.To separate sciatic nerve between the biceps femoris muscle and vastus lateralis muscle. With sharpness cut for sciatic nerve on about 1 cm distance from the muscle. With nerve ends folded 180 degrees,We sutured nerve ends to the surrounding muscle tissue, preventing the natural growth of nerve. The right of separation is not to be cut off after dissection.after three days, A group:The treatment of LIPUS for left lower limbs.2 MHZ frequency, intensity of 30mw/cm2, 20 min/d, lasting 4 weeks. B group:false treatment.Gastrocnemius wet weight examination, histological study were performed at the 4th week after first opearation.Results:1. Gastrocnemius wet weight:the two groups of animals were leg muscle atrophy in varying degrees after surgery. The wet weight of the gastrocnemius muscle was significantly greater in the experimental group than in the control group. The difference was statistically significant(P<0.01).Histological manifestation: the total cross-sectional area of the same parts in the experimental group were significantly bigger than the the control group. The degree of shrinking and the degree of fiber hyperplasia and the degree of atrophy in the experimental group were significantly greater than the the control group. The difference was statistically significant(P<0.01).There was no significant difference in the number atrophy,The difference was not statistically significant(P> 0.05).Conclusion: Low intensity pulsed ultrasound to prevent loss of innervation of the muscle atrophy is safe and effective. Low intensity pulsed ultrasound may be a clinically effective method to treat and prevent muscle atrophy.
