Objective:To evaluate the effects of Chinese herbal decoction (shugan jianpi prescription) in treating hospitalized patients with primary liver cancer after interventional chemotherapy. Methods:From January 2012 to December 2014,42 hospitalized patients with primary liver cancer were chosen and divided into control group (22 cases) and observation group (20 cases) randomly. The patients in control group were received with conventional interventional chemotherapy alone, while those in observation group were treated with shugan jianpi prescription after conventional interventional chemotherapy for twelve weeks. Before and after treatment, clinical symptoms and life quality of patients, plasma tumor marker (AFP), liver function (ALT), and the changes of image examination of two groups were observed. Results:After treatment for 12 weeks, clinical symptoms such as pain, nausea, anorexia, body tired weakness and insomnia in observation group were significantly improved, the improvement in observation group were significantly superior to control group especially in pain, nausea, anorexia and insomnia, the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). The level of AFP declined gradually in both groups after treatment, which is decreased dramatically in observation group than that in control group, the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). The range of focal lesion reduced obviously in ultrasonography and/or computed tomography (CT) imaging in both groups after treatment, but the difference between the two groups was not statistically significant(P>0.05). The disease control rate (CR+PR+SD) was improved obviously in observation group than that in control group (43% vs 34%. P<0.05). The median progression free survival (PFS) and the time to progression (TTP) were longer in observation group compared with control group (60% vs 45%,82% vs 63%, respectively, P<0.05). The Overall survival (OS) was more prolonged in observation group comparing to control group, However, the difference between the two groups was not statistically significant (P>0.05). The recovery rate of liver injury and myelosuppression induced by operation and interventional chemotherapy was higher in observation group than that in control group. Conclusions:Chinese herbal decoction (shugan jianpi prescription) obviously improves clinical symptoms and life quality of patients with primary liver cancer after interventional chemotherapy, which might be a kind of important auxiliary approach for treatment of primary liver cancer.
