The Research On The Agriculture Investigation Reports Of Hainan Island During The Period Of Republic Of China

Hainan Island, also known as "Qiong Ya" and "Joan state", which lies in the southernmost part of the coastal areas of China. It has always been playing an important role in the national defense, and is also really a natural treasure-house of economy. The mostly coverd vast plains is conductive for the land reclamation, and the high temperature and rainy is suitable for crops growth, which possesses an advantageous condition to develop the island's agriculture, and the superior geography environment and rich natural resources is always attached importance in and out nation. During the period of Republic of China, the government and the scholars of colleges have travelled to Hainan Island for field investigation many times, and left a lot of precious source materials. Among them, a large number of agricultural investigation report, includes all aspects of the agriculture in Hainan Island, occupies quite an important position. These surveys not only provide reliable basis in setting suitable economic policy for the government, strongly support the academic research and experimental activity for the college, and turely conduct the direction for the local farmers. In addition, the Japanese have been carried out several research activities, for exploiting and plundering the rich tropical economic resources of Hainan, and obtaining the agricultural information they need badly. This paper is based on the all kinds of agriculture investigation reports I've gathered, aiming to make an analysis of the implementation and significance of those agriculture investigation of Hainan in the period of Republic of China.This paper involves five parts: The first part, pointing out the purpose and meaning of this thesis, introducing the methods of the research and the sources of the historical materials, and reviewing the previous work of the agriculture investigation in Hainan Island. The second part, sketching the historical context and economical background of the rise of the agriculture investigation in Hainan during the period of Republic of China. The third part, particularizing the process, development and mainly contributions of the agriculture which conducted by the government of the Republic of China and a considerable amount of educational institutions at that time. The fourth part, generalizing and discussing the agriculture investigation and economical activities conducted by the Japanese invaders, especially the research made by Taiwan's Japanese colonists during the Anti-Japanese war. The fifth part, organizing and classifying the reports that I've possessed, and analyzing its characteristics and significance on this basis. These agriculture reports can be broadly divided into comprehensive survey reports and topical survey reports, which involved the industry of planting, forestry, husbandry, fishing, land and soil.During the period of Republic of China, the agricultural production in Hainan Island has been gained new development and progress. Based on these agriculture investigation reports, not only can we further explored their academic value, and contribute to understand the transformation of local agriculture at that time. Thus, with the research and summarization of the experience in development and construction which accumulated by all the investigators, the author expects that it can provide some information and reference for today's agricultural progress in Hainan, as well as relevant academic research in the future.
