Pool fire is the general combustion form of combustible liquids leakage.Acquiring the combustion characters of this type of fire is of great benefit to fire fighting and combustible waste liquids treatment.Large oil pool fire often occurs due to oil tanks leakage, oil transport devices leakage and air crafts landing harzards. As there is enough space for evacuation, pool fires occours on land, may not cause great damage on people. But this is not ture when it happens on ships.First, when ships are moving in a high speed, the air around will have a high relative speed, which would greatly enlarge the dangerous area.Second, the narrow space on the ships would limit the performance of fire fighting devices and hinder escape from the fire.In this paper, the author uses the CFD software FDS 6.1.1 to investigate the combustion characters and safety distance of aviation fuel pool fire.As the general speed of ships are 0 to 30knots,this paper mainly focuses on the wind speed of 0,15 and 30 knots,i.e.0m/s,7.7m/s and15.4m/s.The length of oil pool is set to be 5m,10m,15m and 20m.The main conclusions are as following:?1?When the wind speed is set to zero, fire and its plume rise vertically. The isosurface of temperature?100??and soot concerntration?100mg/m3?,which are used to represent the influence of temperature and soot, are alike each other and both are limited in 2D around the oil pool.Radiation is the main factor determining the safety distance.People need to stand farther than 5D;and a distance of more than 1D is enough for device.?2?When the wind speed is not zero, flame and plume both tilt along the wind direction. The angle between ground and plume falls in the range of 27°38°for wind speed of 7.7m/s;the range is 13°20°for wind speed of 15.4m/s.The ground-attched flame length falls in a range of2.53D for wind speed of 7.7m/s;and the range is 34D for wind speed of 15.4m/s.The entrained cold air from the downside of the plume would seprate the plume into two core areas.Overall, the isosurface of 100?and 100mg/m3 extende as far as 10D along the wind direction andą2D in the spanwise direction. The distance in the contrary wind direction is ignorable. For radiation, the safety distances for people are 3D in upstream direction,5D?7.7m/s?and 6D?15.4m/s?in downstream direction and 5D in spanwise direction.
