The Study On Columbarium Architecture Design

Columbarium is a type of building which is built for the high-density storage of cinerary urns.Based on the Nanjing Er-long Mountain Columbarium project,the study tries to explore the contemporary expression of monumentality in columbarium design.The study begins with the problem arising in the practice project:the design of the ashes depositing shelves is separated with the design of the architecture,harming the expression of monumentality.And then,the concept and the origin of monumentality are discussed through the thesis in history.As a result,the concept of Contemporary Expression of Monumentality is proposed and the connections between the monumentality and the columbarium are explained later.On this basis,the main problems of columbarium design including density,shelf design,structure,function and spatial composition are discussed in three scale:the ashes depositing shelves,the architecture units and the total environment.Three designs which started with different scale problems are discussed next to give further study about the problems concerning the expression of monumentality.And the difference between them are also compared carefully.Those two parts together make up a systematic research about the contemporary expression of monumentality in columbarium architecture design.
