"Infinity" is the core concept in ancient Chinese philosophy and classical aesthetics. The traditional Chinese art has an aesthetic tendency of "empty" and a consciousness of infinite space. In Chinese classical gardens, especially in the private gardens of south China, through special design strategies, the limited space can often create infinite space experience. The study of the potential design methods will help us to further explore how to transform the traditional art theories into contemporary architectural design language. Therefore, this thesis proposes the concept of a "sense of infinite space",and manages to discuss how to create this atmosphere from two aspects of spatial connection and spatial structure. The core content of this paper is divided into three sections. The first section is an overview of the "sense of infinite space",mainly expounding the concept, the characteristics of spatial experience and its formation mechanism.Starting from the relations between static and dynamic viewing, this paper attributes the generation of the "sense of infinite space" to the perception of "unlimited scenery" and "infinite realm",which correspond to the particular spatial connections and spatial structures. The second section mainly discusses the design strategies from the perspective of spatial connections.Through the definition of the interface and the introduction of time elements, this chapter categorizes the main spatial connections which lead to the "sense of infinite space" into reversal, implication and obfuscation. And they correspond to the perception of the "accident","imagination",and "indeterminacy",which help people to perceive the infinity of the "scenery".The third section discusses the design strategies on spatial structure.Based on a study of the law in design of classical gardens and through extracting typical spatial fragments, this chapter categorizes the main spatial structures which lead to the "sense of infinite space" into three basic models: zigzags, stacking and circulation. These techniques build the complexity of the spatial experience at different levels and lead to the infinite possibilities of space.
