Ernst May,one of the most outstanding architects and urban planners of the twentieth century in Germany.As a member of CIAM,May played an important role in the international architecture.The design approach,as well as the group form of residential in-depth research and development contribution,which greatly affected the modern architecture of residential design ideas in the direction of development.At the same time,Ernst May also spread a large number of residential planning experience to other countries by the active participation in the CIAM.This paper takes Ernst May's new Frankfurt residential area planning practice as the main research object,and analyzes its early and late residential area planning to form a complete system of ideological system.Exploring the design and planning strategies adopted by Ernst May for different residential problems,as well as social and cultural backgrounds.And providing a more complete summary of his residential area planning and design ideas.In the first place,this paper combs the students' time of Ernst May to his career,digging its theoretical origin and presenting the process of building practice becoming more and more mature.Secondly,combining with the background of the times and the theory and policy,this paper analyzes the source background of Ernst May's creative thoughts and discusses the role of CIAM and other architects in promoting the modern condominiums in the same period.The main content of this paper is to interpret Ernst May's planning practice in Frankfurt,from the overall planning to the spatial organization to explore his design ideas and planning strategies And to extend the discussion of Ernst May early in Silesia and the late practice outside of Germany-the planning of the Soviet and East African settlements.The interpretation of the new Frankfurt planning strategy in different contexts outside Germany,the application and continuation of different cultural backgrounds.Finally,this article summarizes the characteristics of Ernst May design ideas from the perspective of the construction process,the overall planning and the spatial organization model of the residential area,and comments on the strategy.Hoping to deeply understand the German and even in the history of the world occupies an important position in the master ofthe works and ideas to expand the domestic design in the design of residential areas,with a view to China's residential planning and development to provide reference.
