Another Modernism:Research On Bruno Taut's Siedlungen Planning Strategy

The German architect Bruno Taut(1880-1938)as a Germany modern siedlungen planner,had designed more than 10,000 dwellings in Berlin and other places,of which four large siedlungen are listed as world cultural heritage.His siedlungen planning strategy is mainly reflected in the unique planning layout,external space shaping and flexible architectural design methods.Compared with the radical modernists of the same period,his milder modernism is a useful supplement.Taut is often regarded as an expressionist architect,and his extensive practical planning of siedlungen is relatively neglected.Although his contribution in this area has been acknowledged,there is still little research on his planning ideas and strategies for siedlungen in China.This article divides Bruno Taut's siedlungen planning into two major periods chronologically.The first one is the early period from 1913 to 1916,starting with the learning experience of Taut and the German garden city theory at that time,analyzing his early siedlungen planning strategy.The second period was the Berlin period from 1924 to1931.The article carries out design analysis and vertical comparison of his large-scale siedlungen planning,and studies the development of his siedlungen from planning layout to architectural design with a macro-to-micro method.Finally,this paper compares these two periods on their spatial patterns and architectural approaches,and discusses Taut's strategies and ideas for siedlungen planning in the context of modern siedlungen theory in the 1920 s.The paper is to clarify the formation of Taut's another modernism in siedlungen planning concept which is a unique attraction of Bruno Taut's work.
