The theory of Modernism, which developed since World War Two, has great influence on design philosophy of architecture, products, urban planning, etc. at that time and till now. Landscape design in areas like America, Northern Europe and the Netherlands has formed landscape design language fit for local conditions, including their culture, geographical feature and landscape literacy. With a series of recreation, landscape has made its contribution to the improvement of people’s life.Residential district, as one of the urban landscapes long exposed to residents, has affected their daily life. Landscape design in this area requires scientific designing strategy. With the fast economic development in China, urbanization in our country is becoming faster than ever. Large, medium and small cities are going through fast transformation. All of these cities make fast progress in urban residential district construction, which contributes to the new appearance of cities. However, problems and adverse effects brought by too fast developing pace and extensive exploitation should not be ignored.Based on research and analysis of Modernism, this paper aims to assemble a set of reasonable designing language fit for perfect degree and development of residential districts. First of all, after studying on theories related to Modernism, its state of development and actuality from the angle of rationality and function, this paper makes further extracting and assembling of the theory. Then, with status of landscape in China in consideration, the paper utilizes Modernism in landscape design of residential districts.Then, after research on Modernism, the paper makes a tentative trial on a residential district in Chengdu. Reconstruction design is carried out for the district with the guidance of Modernism. The author hopes that better designing strategies will be adopted after research on internal and external factors of landscape design. At the same time, this paper aims to embrace more scientific designing methods for residential district landscape and make contribution to landscape design in China.
