Northwest Architecture And The Localization Of American Modernism

In the context of globalization and modernization,the differences between individual buildings are decreasing,the emotional ties and identity between people and regions are threatened,and the local characteristics become blurred.As a good medicine to improve the convergence of modernism,regional architecture has injected new strength into the region to some extent.At present,in addition to paying attention to the domestic excellent regional architectural theory and creation,we also need to understand the foreign outstanding architectural styles.As an outstanding branch of American regional architecture,northwest architecture is rarely studied in China.This paper analyzes the history of Northwest architecture,to supplement the regional architecture research in other countries,and excavate its value,in order to give inspiration to the development of regional architecture in China.This paper collects a large number of foreign materials,using the methods of literature research,graphic research,comparative study and comprehensive analysis,discusses the evolution system of Northwest architecture in the United States vertically,and analyzes the practical works and continuation of this school from the horizontal perspective,and finally forms the system vein and enlightenment.This paper consists of six chapters:the first chapter discusses the background,purpose and significance of this study,the research situation at home and abroad,the research content and methods,and puts forward the research framework of the paper.In the second chapter,starting from the time series,the development process of regional architecture is sorted out,and the whole part is derived.Based on geographical analysis,the types and distribution of regional architecture in the United States are discussed,so as to trace back the branch of Northwest architecture,and excavate the influence factors behind it on architectural creation from the background.The third chapter describes the sprouting period of Northwest architecture,obtains its origin and development process,and finds the basic prototype in the practice of early architects.The fourth chapter interprets its characteristic construction period,analyzes and interprets the Northwest Architectural Practice of John Yeon and Pietro Belluschi,and digs out the road direction from its definition to the excellent local style.The fifth chapter describes the development period,through the analysis of van evera Bailey and Roland Terry’s architectural creation,we can get the process of its connotation being enriched and extended.The sixth chapter from the northwest architecture heritage,combined with the local university education,historical archives platform and the practice of contemporary local designers,sorted out the continuation mode,and obtained the reference experience and Enlightenment for the development and inheritance of regional architecture in China.Finally,the paper makes a general statement,summarizes the results,and gives the future prospects.This study found that in addition to its excellent design methods and ideas,northwest architecture also has its unique advantages in the treatment of heritage.From this,we can realize the importance of combining modernism with regional characteristics.At the same time,local universities,academic institutions and local architects play an important role in the continuation of style.
