Open Characteristic Research Of Modern Garden Xiaolian Manor In Nanxun

The development of Chinese gardens in modern times is a special stage which inherits the past and ushers in the future as well as has certain influences on contemporary landscape development.However,garden research circles usually turn a blind eye to researches on contemporary gardens.As a consequence,there are few writings about contemporary gardens.In 2016,the author follows supervisor to investigate some contemporary gardens in Nanxun Town in Huzhou City.When visiting Little Lotus Manor and Ying Garden,the author found they are different from classic gardens in regions south of the Yangtze River.After reading relevant literatures,the author finds that most of the literatures are literary description but not detail research data.Hence,the author is very interested in exploring development of contemporary gardens.This thesis selects Little Lotus Manor,one of the existing “great structure in regions south of the Yangtze River”,in Nanxun Ancient Town,which owns the most gardens in modern China as an example to discover the features and formation reasons of the evolution process of classic private gardens' changing from “private” to “public” gardens.Due to silk industry,Nanxun Town in Huzhou City became prosperous for one time.The economic prosperity contributes to a batch of merchant groups in Nanxun who were merchants outside but scholars inside.When building private gardens,those merchants inherited Chinese traditional garden building ideas,but were also influenced by Western cultures due to their frequent communication with foreign merchants.Hence,in terms of aesthetic appreciation,technologies and functions,new characteristics integrating the West and the East were formed.Nanxun gardens,as an epitome of modern garden changes,reveal the gardens' characteristics of popularized users,open border,garden building for practical use,aesthetic changes and integration of advanced technologies.From Nanxun gardens,people can gain a glance at evolution traces of modern gardens and enlightenment of the openness to operate modern gardens.Meanwhile,those gardens also urge people to ponder over how to retain and carry forward Chinese literati's life interest through the creation of open landscape in modern cities.
